Stripped of Our Human Rights

Press Release

Stripped of Our Human Rights

To coincide with national action taking place in London, Liverpool, Birmingham,
Brighton and Leeds we will stage a protest at Grey’s Monument, Newcastle
upon Tyne, on Wednesday the 26th of June at 12pm – 1pm.

It has been eight years since the Government and NHS England made promises
to provide homes instead of hospitals for people with learning disabilities,
autism or both. Since the shocking abuse at Winterbourne View, promise after
promise has been broken. There are still around 2300 people living in
Assessment and Treatment Units (ATU’s). There is not enough community
support being developed and private hospitals are thriving and growing.

On 22nd of May we saw another undercover Panorama investigation that
showed the abuse, torture and neglect of people in private Assessment and
Treatment Units in Country Durham. There have been endless news stories
about the abuse and neglect that many people experience in ATU’s all over the
country.

Local people with learning disabilities and autistic people, their friends,
families and supporters will be demonstrating. They will be joined by allies
from local charities, the health services.

Grey’s Monument, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5AF 12 noon – 1pm.
