What is Quality Checking

Quality checking is a way for people with a learning disability to look at services and say what is working well and what needs to change. It focuses on real experiences, not just policies or paperwork. By listening to people who use services, quality checking helps organisations understand what good support really looks like and where improvements are needed. It is a practical, person-led approach that leads to better, more responsive services.

Skills for People’s Quality Checker training enables people with a learning disability, alongside their supporters, to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to carry out quality checks. The training is interactive and accessible, combining discussion, practical tools, and real-life examples.

Our Quality Checker Training

Participants learn how to assess services, communicate their findings clearly, and make recommendations that lead to meaningful change. By the end of the training, participants are ready to take an active role in improving services.

The training is based on Keys to Citizenship.

Keys to Citizenship is a framework developed by Simon Duffy and Wendy Perez that explores what a good life looks like for people with a learning disability. It focuses on key areas such as relationships, contribution, choice, and having control over your own life. The framework helps people think about what matters most to them and provides a practical way to understand and improve the support they receive, making sure it is truly person-centred.

Our training is facilitated by experienced Quality Checkers and supporters who have delivered this programme over many years.

We recommend a cohort of up to 20 participants:

  • 10 people with learning disabilities (Quality Checkers)
  • Up to 10 supporters

Each Quality Checker should ideally have a supporter they can work with throughout the training (one supporter may support more than one Quality Checker). Supporters are expected to attend the full training.
