Our History

Skills for People began in November 1983: the first organisation of its kind in England.

From the very beginning, disabled people led the organisation. They worked in teams to run training and workshops. Ever since disabled people, particularly people with learning disabilities, have been leading our organisation, and providing our services.

In 1983, this was a new way to work. Now there are many organisations, where disabled people are in charge.

Over the years, the ideas of disabled people, like those who helped to set up Skills for People have been included in Government policy. This has changed the lives of disabled people. We are proud that Skills for People has been part of this movement. We know there is a lot more to do!
